Cherith Curtis
Cherith's work depicts New Zealand's diverse range of fauna and flora. Her meticulous eye for detail is expressed through a photorealistic style, which conveys accurate shape, colour and form. This is achieved by applying oil pigment, layer by layer, to achieve depth and resonance. The use of fine brushstrokes adds intricate detail to the subject matter. "New Zealand's pride in it's majestic landscape beauty is well known the world over. I would like us to have pride in the beauty of the veins of a Puka leaf, the changing red, orange, yellow and green hues of the Pohutukawa leaf, the unnerving stare of the Pukeko and Tui, and all the small, intricate, details of New Zealand's Native Flora and Fauna." Born and raised in Takapuna to a large artistic family, including her grandmother who was a graduate of Elam Art School, she had the perfect surroundings to nuture her creative side. An Art teacher at high school also had a profound influence on her, "working in Bryan's ceramic studio during the school holidays was an eye opener into the world of the professional artist. The hard work, the artistic processes and complexities of a working studio, really brought home to me that this wouldn't be an easy career option, but I could see the love and passion for it in Bryan's work and himself, and I knew that one day it would eventually be the road I followed"
Cherith has been a professional painter for several years after a career in graphic design and briefly as a gallery owner. She now works from her studio in Warkworth, which she has come to think of as home. Her artworks are held in many private collections in New Zealand, England, and Canada and cover a wide range of genres and mediums.
